Documentation / KVM Virtual Servers

Backups

Backups are under VPS, Backups, and on each VPS's Backups tab.

How backups work

  • A full backup is a complete copy of the VPS's disk.
  • An incremental backup copies only what changed since the previous backup on the same destination, so it is small and fast.
  • VPSes keep running while they are backed up. A stopped VPS gets a full copy.
  • After a restore, a disk resize or a reinstall, the next backup on every destination is a full one.

Destinations

Add one under VPS, Backups, Destinations, then use Test: it writes, reads back and deletes a small file.

Type What you enter
Folder on the hypervisor A folder such as /backup/vps, created on each hypervisor. Use it together with an off-site destination
SSH / SFTP server Server, port, user and folder. The panel creates a key and shows its public key: add it to the user's ~/.ssh/authorized_keys. Password login is also possible
FTP server Server, user, password and folder, optionally with FTPS
S3-compatible storage Access key, secret, bucket, region and, except for Amazon S3, the endpoint. Works with Backblaze B2, Wasabi, Cloudflare R2 and MinIO
Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive Your own OAuth app's client ID and secret, then Connect to sign in. The form shows the callback URL to add to the app

Backups are sent from the hypervisor straight to the destination.

Schedules

Under VPS, Backups, Schedules, choose:

  • When: daily or weekly at a time, every few hours, or any cron time
  • Type: incremental with a full backup every N days, or full every time
  • Keep: how many backup sets to keep per VPS (a full backup and the incrementals after it); older sets are deleted
  • VPSes: all of them, including new ones, or the ones you pick

Run now starts a schedule's backups straight away.

Back up now

On a VPS's Backups tab, pick a destination and Incremental or Full, then Back up.

Restore

Choose a backup and Restore. The VPS's disk is replaced with that point in time, using the full backup and the incrementals up to it, and the VPS restarts. Anything written after the backup is lost. Clients can restore their own VPS from its Backups tab.

Deleting backups

Deleting a full backup also deletes the incrementals that build on it; the panel asks first. Removing a destination keeps the files that are already on it.
